Clarion Hotel Mestari transformed a 1930s office building originally built as the headquarters of the Finnish Master Builders’ Association. Rather than imposing an external theme, the identity grew from the history, materiality and culture already embedded in the site. The result is a contemporary lifestyle hotel in which construction, craftsmanship and authenticity become spatial language. The design keeps the original brick and structural steel visible and lets the new layers — warm oak, blackened metal and precise lighting — read clearly as their own time. The glass-roofed atrium is the heart of the house: four storeys of original facade turned inward, planted and lit so that the courtyard works as lobby, lounge and dining room through the day. Circulation is treated as experience rather than service space, with the illuminated timber stair drawing guests upward. The commission extended well beyond guest-facing hotel spaces. It included all meeting and conference facilities, staff areas and kitchens, the office and meeting spaces of the Master Builders’ Foundation, its members’ club at street level, and a spa within one of the independently leased commercial units. We also designed the architectural identity and lighting of the main entrance, the exterior lighting concept and the interior lighting as an integral part of the architecture. The guest rooms continue the same dialogue between structure and light. The rooms include bespoke luminaires in I-beam shape inspired by the builder masters’ work field, combining direct and indirect light. Together with the young sculptors Pulkkinen & Rautiainen, a metal relief was designed for the rooms. Custom lighting was also developed for the public areas, including a spherical chandelier that reads as a crafted object rather than an off-the-shelf fitting.
