Kaupungintalon ravintola sits in the inner court of the Helsinki City Townhall, an A-listed building designed by Arno Ruusuvuori in 1960, next to Senate Square, where the Mayor of Helsinki and the City Council sit. The renovation was executed in close co-operation with the museum authorities. With delicate changes we created an interior designed to last, yet unmistakably contemporary. Marble, real leather, brass and limestone form the classic material palette. The warm terracotta of the mural wall was hand-picked from the artwork itself, replacing a cool light blue and adding significant warmth to the space. All fixed furniture is custom designed for the restaurant, as are the customised Italian oak chairs with leather upholstery. The ceilings were protected, but we were able to add a small new layer of light above the reception and cashier counter and to renew the lighting technique in the existing fittings. Tom Dixon pendants give a contemporary swing to the ceiling.
