The commission was initiated by President Martti Ahtisaari and Mrs Eeva Ahtisaari with the aim of introducing elements of Finnish and Nordic furniture history into the contemporary presidential residence, particularly in spaces used for receiving international heads of state and royal guests. Historical furniture was integrated into the existing interior, while new bespoke pieces – including furniture, lighting and fixed joinery – were designed to complement rather than imitate the historic elements. The work also included custom display structures for art glass and new furnishings for reception areas, combining contemporary Finnish art and textile design with historical furniture. The project explored the dialogue between old and new, cultural heritage and contemporary design within a nationally significant architectural setting.
