Design that moves: why “emotions per sqm” is the new currency of luxury hospitality

The future of luxury hotels is being defined by a simple idea: “emotions per sqm” — how much emotional impact a space can create per square meter.

Emotions decide before the booking button

Guests no longer choose hotels based on logic alone. They choose the place that makes them feel something: authenticity, connection, a sense of belonging. When that emotion is triggered, the decision is made long before the booking button is pressed.

I have seen again and again how spaces shaped around a genuine story influence guest behavior far more than any trend-driven aesthetics. Not with temporary wow-effects, but with honest materials, cultural layers, and a quiet quality that welcomes guests on an emotional level.

Design is not decoration, it is emotional architecture. And when emotional architecture is done well, it drives measurable results.

Mestari: a story impossible to replicate

One of the strongest examples is our work with Clarion Hotel Mestari in Helsinki. The entire interior concept is built on the heritage of the original building owners, the Master Builders’ Guild (“Mestari”). We translated this identity into a warm, robust and characterful material palette: craftsmen’s textures, solid materials, and a storytelling layer that celebrates mastery, skill and history.

The result? A hotel that instantly resonated with guests. A space where people felt the narrative before they read it. And a brand that stands out in a highly competitive market because its story is authentic, rooted and impossible to replicate.

A strategic choice, not a design choice

This is exactly why leading luxury developers worldwide are now aligning around one conclusion: emotional experience is a competitive advantage and one that cannot be copied.

Investing in genuine local storytelling is not a design choice. It is a strategic one.

I believe Finnish design — with its honesty, material depth and sensitivity to place — has a unique opportunity to shape the next era of luxury hospitality.

Emotions decide. Stories ignite. Design turns them into experiences.
