Five principles behind a guest room people sleep well in

A guest room is the most repeated space in any hotel. Every decision is multiplied by the number of keys — and by every night of the property's life.

1. Build the light in layers

A room needs a working light, a reading light, an evening light and a night light, each switchable without leaving the bed. Rooms that fail this test feel uncomfortable for reasons guests cannot name, and the review simply says the room felt cold.

Indirect light on a ceiling or headboard wall does more for perceived quality than an expensive downlight specification.

2. Give luggage a place

Unpacking is the first thing a guest does. A bench, an open rail, a shelf at the right height and two accessible sockets solve more complaints than any decorative gesture.

3. Treat acoustics as part of the finish schedule

Corridor doors, bathroom fans, neighbouring televisions and the ventilation itself set the acoustic floor of a room. Textile, joinery placement and door detailing are the affordable levers once the structure is built.

4. Resolve the bathroom as a sequence

Shower, mirror, surface for belongings and a place for a wet towel need to sit in an order that works for two people in the morning. Generous lighting at the mirror and one warm material are usually enough to lift the room out of the standard.

5. Make one thing specific to this house

A relief made with local sculptors, a luminaire drawn from the building's own structure, a textile developed for the property — a single specific element tells the guest where they are and gives the property something that cannot be copied by the hotel down the street.
