The importance of an authentic story in interiors

Spaces used to speak

In the past, the significance of a space was clearly visible in its architecture and interiors. Ancient Greek and Roman mythology, images of Gods, ornaments, and skillfully made details all played a role in marking the importance and meaning of a place. They told stories of value and purpose.

Today, minimalism has swept away nearly all ornamentation. When we do see ornaments, they are often simplified and stripped of meaning — perhaps beautiful, but lacking a story. At the same time, we continue to admire classic interiors, whether in restaurants, cafés, or hotels. Spaces that carry history and layers of design continue to resonate. Classics remain timeless.

More than colour and surface

This is why, in line with my own design philosophy, I call on both designers and clients to demand more than just color or surface. In spatial design we should ask: what is this place’s relationship to its architecture and surroundings? What story does it carry?

In Finnish city centers, we already have a rich tapestry of different eras’ imprints — buildings from different eras, styles next to each other without a visual harmony, often as a result of tearing down something much more beautiful but old. But do we truly honor them? Or must every new building stand as a purely clinical, anonymous contrast? Take Mannerheimintie in Helsinki, for example: opposite Stockmann, a new building now stands aloof, disconnected from the dialogue with its surroundings.

The authentic story makes a space meaningful

I believe it is precisely the authentic story — a story that is rooted in history, context, and layers — that makes a space meaningful. That is what allows a hotel, restaurant, or public space to touch people and leave a lasting impression. To be a future classic too.
